As I watched in amazement at what happened last night at our first fundraiser, my mind went back more than 35 years ago when I was a kid at the Maryland School for the Deaf. At each meal, all students from all walks of life and faith marched into the cafeteria, to our assigned tables, stood behind our chairs where our food was, and signed in unison:
“God is Great.
God is Good.
Let us thank Him for our food.
Amen.”
Then we all pulled out our chairs and sat to eat.
Of course, this was before prayer was outlawed in public schools. However, although we all prayed this prayer before each meal, it became so redundant that it lost its meaning. We were just going through the motions without realizing the significance of His greatness and His goodness.
Fast forward to last night, I said to myself the same prayer…But it had real, personal meaning and significance. Without Him, none of this would have been possible. I saw so many people come, give financially, help with setting up, decorating, cooking, serving, washing, and cleaning up, and give words of encouragement and support.
As people left, I thanked them for coming and helping … But saying “thank you” seemed so inadequate – yet many people would respond, “No – thank you!”
At the end of the day, we found that we were provided with enough funds for our next payment!
Heather and I were humbled by this entire experience.
“God is Great. God is Good. Let us thank Him…”
